This morning like many mornings
I find myself hiding from the news
Not wanting to hear about how many
Were killed and abused
As if not hearing about
The betrayals to our humanity
Would make them go away
And that the pains of the ones
Feeling the injustice is not real, not my reality
But you see humanity is my reality

This morning like many mornings
I did not want to hear the news
I thought I knew how it would read
More assault on our humanity
As these lines of divisions
Now the lines from which we hang
Lines of mis-conceptions for guidance
Lines of mis-education supporting
The hatred the injustices the atrocities
This all consuming greed

This morning like many mornings
I did not want to hear the news
Of this vicious cycle of betrayal
With nations and governments
Leading the charge
Waging wars upon our humanity
So greed injustice and inequality
Reigns supreme
Always redefining seeking new victims
New ways to continue
This business of raping and pillaging
To benefit a few

This morning like many mornings
I did listen to the news because I have to
So I do not forget about all these victims
Forget that I am as much a victim
As the natives who lost the land under my feet
As a community with contaminated water
People whose countries are plundered
People under regimes and wars
All of us victims of greed and oppression
Unjust laws and policies

This morning like many mornings
I did listen to the news
Needing to hear of the continuing resistance
Against greed and injustice
To remind myself of the sacrifices made
For what little rights I enjoy
This morning I listen to news
To remind myself of my place in this struggle.
